The line to get into Cornel Hennessy’s new club stretched down the block and wrapped around the corner.

Half-naked girls in hooker heels huddled in groups, laughing and taking selfies. Badass black chicks rocked fresh relaxers, braids, and weaves alongside white girls and Latinas whose tresses blew in the September breeze. Dudes were leaning out the windows of shiny whips and slabs with booming bass sound systems that flooded the street with “chopped and screwed” hip-hop—a Houston staple.

Tamia took in the whole scene with a smile, then turned from the window to stare at Brandon. She couldn’t help admiring the way he drove, leaning back in the seat and steering the Maybach with one hand. He was so fucking smooth, Crown Royal on ice. Just watching him made her nipples hard.

As they crept through the bumper-to-bumper snarl, she said warmly, “I can’t wait to meet your friends.”

Brandon glanced at her and smiled. “They’re looking forward to meeting you, too.”

She smiled. “The one who owns the club—”

“Cornel.”

“Yes. Cornel. Is his last name really Hennessy?”

“Yup. And he’s got the personality to match.”

“I bet.” Tamia grinned. “I assume Club C2H is named after him?”

“Uh-huh.” Brandon chuckled. “He used to call himself ‘C to the H.’ It’s also a shoutout to his mama. When he was growing up, she used to tell him he was trouble times two because he was always getting into something.”

Tamia laughed. “He sounds like quite a character. How long have you known him?”

“Since we were sixteen. We went off to different colleges but ended up pledging the same fraternity. So we’re frat brothers, too.”

Tamia smiled. “How’d you two meet?”

“At a basketball game when we were in high school,” Brandon said. “I was at the game with my best friend, Dre, and some other dudes he rolled with. Their school was playing Cornel’s and Justin’s school. Those two were best friends, and Justin was on the basketball team. During the game, Dre and his boys were wilin’ out, you know, talking mad shit and taunting the other players, tryna get in their heads. It was working on Justin. He started missing easy layups and turning the ball over. Cornel and his crew got mad, so they came over to the visitor side and started beefing with us. We were jawing back and forth and about to throw hands when two security guards rushed over and separated us. They sent Cornel and his crew back to the other side of the gym and threatened to toss us out on our asses if we didn’t shut up.” Brandon chuckled as he deftly switched into the shorter lane, finding a gap that wasn’t there. “Justin got his mojo back and ended up scoring the game-winning shot. I went up to him after the game, shook his hand, and congratulated him. He appreciated the respect, and so did Cornel. Even Dre had to give Justin his props. After that we all became friends. Been thick as thieves ever since.”

Tamia grinned at Brandon. “So you’re the diplomat in the group.
